nic.at celebrates 1.5 million registered .at domains
This month, nic.at has reason to celebrate: the Austrian domain registry has reached the incredible milestone of 1,500,000 registered .at domains.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous activities have transitioned to the internet, causing one's online presence to become increasingly vital. This trend is expected to persist in 2023, as evidenced by the surge in .at domain registration numbers. In comparison to the pre-pandemic period, domain growth nearly doubled between 2020 and 2022. In 2019, there was a recorded increase of 21,175 .at domains. However, since 2020, this growth has significantly accelerated, with over 40,000 new domains registered annually.
It's especially gratifying that during the first quarter of 2023, nic.at registered nearly 30,000 domains, which amounts to almost half of the growth seen in 2022 (59,695 domains), thus surpassing the 1.5 million mark. Over the past two years, this translates to an average of approximately 300 domain registrations per day.
nic.at CEO Richard Wein says about the upward trend: "We are pleased that registrations continue to increase. This confirms to us that the domain extension .at continues to be attractive and will certainly remain so in the future. After all, we are among the 15 largest ccTLDS (country code top level domains) within Europe."
.at domain still number one in Austria
In 2023, over 71 % of all .at, co.at, and or.at domains continue to be registered by owners in Austria, making them the "Internet home" for numerous Austrians. Another intriguing fact is that approximately 2.4 % of registered .at domains are "IDNs" (Internationalized Domain Names). This means that these domains, in addition to letters, hyphens, and numbers, also utilize special characters such as umlauts (IDN characters) during registration. Unconventional company or product names, as well as web offerings in other languages and character sets, are easily accommodated – there are virtually no boundaries to creativity when it comes to selecting names.
