/ Our Mission
nic.at GmbH is the official registry for all domains ending in .at, and for the extensions co.at and or.at. As the only registry for .at domains, we are aware of our special market situation and take our duties and responsibilities very seriously. The Vienna University Computer Center (ZID), where Austria's domain history began, has remained an important technical partner in domain administration to this day.
Duties of nic.at
nic.at GmbH is the contract partner of .at domain holders and is responsible for customer service, data care, registrar support, legal services as well as for accounting & bookkeeping. nic.at is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Internet Stiftung.
Registration and administration of .at domains
There is a central registry for every top-level domain. It operates a database with all domain entries and special name servers for the entire top-level domain. These are what make domains globally accessible. We administer the data of all .at, .co.at, and .or.at domains. No matter via whom a domain is registered: The domain must be registered with us in order for it to work.
Current Whois database of all .at domains
As a service, we provide the domain data for public queries (Whois domain query), thus offering the most up-to-date and reliable source of Whois data of the .at zone.
Secure maintenance of all data on .at domains
Our data and name servers are technically protected against unauthorised access and failure. But the security of .at domains is also provided by manual checks: Data will only be changed if the domain holder confirms the transaction with his signature.
Qualified customer service for domain holders and registrars
We attach great importance to personal support. Our professional staff members process your requests quickly and reliably - by e-mail, in writing or by telephone.
Information for the Internet community
We consider ourselves a centre of excellence when it comes to domains. For this reason, we regularly publish news from the domain world and are happy to be your point of contact for all questions concerning domains. Sign up for our newsletter now (bottom right in the footer area) to keep up-to-date on current issues and developments.
Cooperation with national and international organisations
In cooperation with the Internet Stiftung, we represent the interests of the Austrian Internet community in various public bodies, such as ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Numbers and Names), CENTR (Council of European National Top Level Domain Registries), and RIPE (Réseaux IP Européens). We are also permanently in touch with relevant organisations like the Austrian Domain Name Council, the European Commission, and technical bodies (e.g. IETF).
Principles of Austrian domain administration
nic.at follows eight principles that govern domain administration. These are summarised in the Austrian Charter of Domain Administration and can be downloaded as a PDF file.
